Handling a concession on an AS9102 FAI report
During final inspection of the first article of a critical aerospace part, a centre distance is 0.012 mm out of tolerance. The design office accepts the part under concession, because the assembly clearance is still sufficient. The quality manager has to record this accepted nonconformance correctly on AS9102 Form 3.
How to handle a concession on an AS9102 FAI report
| AS9102 Form 3 field | Field title | Mandatory entry for a concession |
|---|---|---|
| Field 9 | Results | The value actually measured (e.g. 50.032 mm) |
| Field 11 | Nonconformance Number | Official concession / nonconformance report number |
| Field 12 | Additional Data / Comments | Note of the concession granted and who granted it |
On Form 1, Field 19 (does the report contain a documented nonconformance?) must then be ticked “yes”.
Recording the nonconformance report number
Any characteristic measured out of tolerance must carry its formal concession number in Field 11 of Form 3. The concession signed by the customer’s technical authority must be attached to the FAI package. To go back over the standard entries, read our article on filling in AS9102 Form 3.
What an FAI concession means for the approval of the batch
A concession accepted on the first article doesn’t allow the following production parts to drift as a matter of course. A corrective action must be started to bring the machining process back to the middle of the tolerance.
Full example: approving a housing under concession
Pump housing with a ⌀25 H7 dimension measured at 25.026 mm (5 µm over the upper tolerance). Concession NCR-2026-088 granted by the customer. 1. Field 8 (Requirement): ⌀25 H7 (25.000 / 25.021). 2. Field 9 (Results): 25.026 mm. 3. Field 11 (NCR): NCR-2026-088. 4. Form 1, Field 19: yes. Verdict: FAI package accepted under concession.
Major pitfalls when handling FAI concessions
The first pitfall is writing the nominal size instead of the measured value to avoid raising a concession. The second is a nonconformance report without the customer’s signature. The third comes from forgetting to close the corrective action. To export your FAI forms automatically and in full compliance, discover CoteCote and our contact page.
